Sarah Teather, Member of Parliament for Brent Central, has tabled a Parliamentary Motion calling for the closure of Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp. The prison still holds 166 inmates - many of whom have never been charged - and detainees have been on a hunger strike for over 100 days.

One of those inmates is British resident Shaker Aamer, who has been held in Guantanamo Bay without charge for over 10 years. Miss Teather is urging the British Government to work with the United States administration to ensure that Mr Aamer returns home as soon as possible.

The 'Enough Food for Everyone IF' campaign is a coalition of over 200 charities demanding that world leaders assembling for the G8 meeting next month in Northern Ireland take action to end world hunger.

Sarah Teather met with Sister Alexine Alexander and five of her fellow Sisters, who live in Cricklewood, when they visited Parliament on Wednesday 15th May to discuss the IF campaign. The visit was part of an event organised by CAFOD, the Catholic aid agency, for whom Sister Alexine is a campaigner.

Responding to George's Osborne's comments regarding the welfare system and Mick Philpott, who was sentenced to life imprisonment today after being found guilty of the manslaughter of six of his children, Sarah Teather MP said:

"I am shocked and appalled that George Osborne has stooped so low as to make a crude political point out of the tragic deaths of six young children. It's one thing for a tabloid newspaper to make unsophisticated, clumsy political arguments, quite another for the Chancellor of the Exchequer to join in.

  • Sarah Teather at the Islamic University of Gaza
    Article: Mar 6, 2013

I have visited the Middle East before, once to Israel and twice to the West Bank. This was my third visit to Gaza, so in some ways I feel I know what to expect. However, the last time I travelled to the region was in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 - 2009 Operation Cast-Lead which saw Israeli bombing devastate Gaza destroying key infrastructure as well as people's homes and livelihoods. This time around I am particularly interested in seeing the progress made to rebuild the area and in hearing about the experiences of the Palestinians who live there.

Sarah Teather, the Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central and member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Palestine, today raised the shooting of Palestinian fishing boats during Foreign and Commonwealth Office questions in the House of Commons.

    Miss Teather asked:

"I recently visited Gaza as part of a cross-party delegation with Interpal. While there I was alarmed to witness, on three different occasions, the shooting at and intimidation of Palestinian fishing boats that appeared to be clearly inside the six-mile limit agreed by the ceasefire. Earlier, the Secretary of State roundly condemned, as is right and proper, the firing of rockets into Israel, but does he agree that peace depends on both sides sticking to the terms of the ceasefire, including Israeli naval ships?"

  • Sarah at the Maternity Matters Report launch
    Article: Mar 5, 2013

Last week, Sarah Teather hosted the launch of a report which details the experiences of pregnant women in the asylum system. The research, carried out by Maternity Action and Refugee Council, found that the UK Border Agency is endangering the health of pregnant asylum seeking women and their babies by moving them to accommodation around the country, thereby removing them from essential healthcare and leading to isolation.
