Lib Dems take Post Office petition to Parliament

July 1, 2003 12:00 AM

Sarah Teather, Havard Hughes and Vince Cable MP with the Lib Dem petition against Post Office closuresLocal Lib Dem campaigners Sarah Teather and Cllr Havard Hughes this week took petitions to save two Brent post offices to Parliament. A staggering 3000 Post Office closures are planned across the country including a third of all Post Offices in Brent. In an effort to save the latest two post offices threatened with closure, the Gladstone Parade Post Office on Edgware Road and the Monks Parade Post Office on Harrow Road Wembley, local Lib Dem campaigners have enlisted the help of Lib Dem MP Dr Vince Cable, Shadow Trade and Industry Minister.

Sarah Teather, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Brent East said, "The Liberal Democrats believe that local Post Offices are vital to the local community and that the Government should do everything it can to stop this wave of closures.

"These Post Offices are popular community services used by many local people to pay their rent, cash cheques and buy stamps. If we lose them, many elderly people will find it difficult to walk to other branches - particularly in Cricklewood where the walk is uphill. The post office is also the hub of the small parade of shops here and if it closes the survival of other local shops is threatened too."

Sarah and Havard handed Dr Vince Cable MP around 500 signatures calling on the Government to save the Gladstone Parade post office and a similar number for the Monks Parade Post office. Around 120,000 people have already signed the national Lib Dem petition to save local Post Offices and Dr Cable MP has already handed in 100,000 to 10 Downing Street.

Cllr Havard Hughes, GLA Spokesperson for Brent and Harrow said "With the help of Vince Cable MP, local Lib Dems have already forced the Post Office to think again over its plans to close the Carlyon Road Post Office in Wembley. We hope that we will also be able to prevent the closure of the Post Offices on Edgware Road and Harrow Road."

If you are a resident of the Brent Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
