Sarah Teather, Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesperson for Brent East has welcomed yesterday's launch of a public consultation on lowering the voting age by the Electoral Commission. The launch took place in Brent East, at Queens Park Community School.
"This is a major consultation on a very important subject," said Sarah. "people can take this opportunity to make their feelings known."
"Liberal Democrats believe that the current voting age of 18 means that many young people are denied the chance to have their say when they want to and this makes them believe that politicians and parties are not interested in what they have to say."
"We believe that lowering the voting age to 16 would be much more fair. At 16 people pay taxes and national insurance and even go to war, but they can't vote on who should be in Government. It would also help to get people into the habit of voting earlier."
Anyone interested in backing the Liberal Democrat campaign for votes at 16 can get in touch with Sarah at 82 Walm Lane, Willesden Green, London NW2 4RA 020 8459 0455 or via email at sarahteather@brentlibdems.org.uk
