IDS's Tories Admit Defeat In Brent East

Troubled Tory Leader Iain Duncan Smith

Local Conservatives have given up in the race to elect a new MP for Brent East.

In a frank interview with the Daily Telegraph, their candidate Uma Fernandes wrote off her chances saying Brent East is a Labour seat and that she hoped she 'might get to fight a better seat next time.'

Her remarks, particularly about finding 'a better seat next time' have angered many local people. Many angry Conservative supporters have called the Lib Dem office to pledge their support to Lib Dem campaigner Sarah Teather.

Sarah Teather commented, "This is an amazing admission by the local Tories and confirms what people are telling us on the doorsteps in Brent. Everyone knows that the Tories cannot win around here."

Flying start for Lib Dem campaign

The Lib Dem campaign to win in Brent East is already off to a flying start with visits from Charles Kennedy, Simon Hughes and several other MPs.

Sarah Teather said, "The Lib Dems can win here in Brent East. People feel let down by a Labour Government that seems to ignore local people. They want a change and they know that only the Lib Dems can deliver this in Brent."

Labour selects candidate

Labour has selected a Blair loyalist Euro MP to defend the seat against the Lib Dems.

Sarah said, "Local people need someone to speak out against Labour's neglect of our area - not another one of Tony Blair's cronies."

Daily Telegraph Quotes -

"No one, not even Mrs Fernandes (Tory candidate), expects the Tories to win..."

"If I do well...I might get to fight a better seat next time." - Conservative candidate Uma Fernandes

If you are a resident of the Brent Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
