Sarah Teather MP
Sarah Teather MP for Brent East has given her backing to a Commons motion calling for the voting age to be lowered to sixteen.
The Commons motion supported by local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather welcomes the formation of the Votes at 16 campaign which has been formed by a coalition of charities, political organizations and young people.
Sarah Teather MP said:
"The Votes at 16 campaign is an important one. Lowering the voting age would do much to improve the quality of politics in the United Kingdom by widening the level of debate.
"It would help demonstrate to young people that their opinions are valued and help reconnect with those who may otherwise may never vote. It still seems ludicrous to me that a person can work, get married and join the army in this country before they are allowed to vote."
