Simon Hughes is committed to improving public transport for Londoners

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather was today joined by Lib Dem London Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes at the launch of a Liberal Democrat rail survey outside Queen's Park station. The Liberal Democrats are keen to find out the views of rail passengers particularly because of the recent increases in transport prices.

The Liberal Democrats have been surveying across London to find out the views of commuters. Brent East MP Sarah Teather is concerned that recent price fare hikes enforced by the Mayor of London will have a negative impact on public transport use.

The survey of local rail users was carried out between 7am and 9am this morning during this time a thousand leaflets were distributed by the Liberal Democrats. After the surveying had finished a team of Liberal Democrat volunteers removed a handful of leaflets from the station platform that had been discarded so as to avoid any inconvenience to rail staff and passengers.

Brent East MP Sarah Teather said:

"I want to know what the people of Brent think about the state of the railway system. I want to know what their issues are as they travel to work, visit friends or go shopping. In a world-city like London a smooth running transport system is essential for residents.

"The Liberal Democrats are committed to fighting for reliable and affordable public transport. The price rises recently imposed by the Mayor are completely unacceptable if we want to encourage public transport use. The fare increases are no good for the environment and they are no good for the people of Brent."

Lib Dem London Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes said:

"London's railway system causes misery to millions of passengers every week. Delays, overcrowding and cancellations are all part of the day-to-day hassles that rail users have to face.

"This is the first London wide survey of the railways of 2004 and is likely to reveal deep dissatisfaction amongst commuters over the Government's handling of the rail network. It will also assess whether Londoners think Ken Livingstone has improved services or failed to deliver.

"This new survey is the start of a major campaign to stand up for London's hard pressed commuters."
