Brent Lib Dems deliver Brent's message to Tony Blair. 'Hands off our Post Offices'
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather yesterday delivered a message to Tony Blair from Brent's residents objecting to the closure of seven Post Offices in Brent. The Brent East MP was joined by fellow Brent Liberal Democrats Councillors Havard Hughes and James Allie in presenting the petition at Downing Street.
The Liberal Democrats across Brent have collected over 1,000 signatures of local residents objecting to the proposed closure of seven post offices in Brent. The closures come as part of the Post Office Limited's 'modernisation' plans which are backed by the Labour Government which will see 3,000 post offices close across Britain and 214 close across London.
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:
"The people of Brent have spoken; they are angry that their local Post Offices are being closed. I find it appalling that the Post Office and the Labour Government seems so set on the closure of our local post offices here in Brent.
"It would be a real body-blow for local residents if we lost seven post offices in Brent. It is time for Tony Blair and the Labour Government to abandon their support for the closure of Brent's post offices.
"With 214 Post Offices set to close across London under Labour; only the Liberal Democrats are committed to preserving the local Post Office network in Brent and across London. The Conservatives are irrelevant in this debate their commitment to local Post Offices is shown by the fact that when they were in power 4,000 post offices closed."
