Sarah Teather MP is furious that Labour aren't listening

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has today slammed the decision of Post Office Limited to close the Post Office at 344 High Road, Willesden Green. The local Brent East MP is furious that the views of local residents have been ignored and has branded the consultation a 'sham'.

Sarah Teather MP had previously handed in a petition to Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street with over 1,000 signatures from Brent residents opposed to the closure scheme. The Liberal Democrat MP only last week tabled a Commons motion condemning the proposed closure of seven of Brent's Post Offices.

The Brent East MP is concerned that the closure will mean people having to queue for longer at nearby Post Offices. The local MP has written to Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Patricia Hewitt MP urging her to overturn the decision.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"These consultations are a complete sham, Brent residents were clearly opposed to the closure of this Post Office; yet the Post Office and the Labour Government have once again ignored the views of local people.

"The Post Office itself admits that there will be some customers who will suffer great inconvenience because of this closure. It is elderly and disabled customers who will suffer the most because of this closure.

"We have seen already in Brent the effect of the Post Office and Labour Government's closure programme. Residents in Kilburn are badly feeling the effects of the closure of Brondesbury Post Office last year. The queues at Brondesbury Villas Post Office down the road are now horrendous as a result of the closure and often stretch far out of the Post Office itself. I fear that local residents will now suffer longer queues at nearby Post Offices because of these closures.

"I find it appalling that the Labour Government are endorsing the closure of 214 Post Offices across London. I have written to the Minister urging her to overturn the decision of the Post Office Limited. It is about time the Labour Government started to listen to the people of Brent."
