Sarah Teather and fellow Brent Liberal Democrats deliver a powerful message to Tony Blair
Dear Tim,
I would like to thank the Times/Chronicle for the work it has done in highlighting the closure of local Post Offices.
This is a vital campaign. The closure of local Post Offices affects those most vulnerable in our society -- the elderly and the disabled. Apart from the distance many elderly and disabled residents will have to travel if their local post office is closed, the loss of the post office also has a detrimental effect on the high street. Once the post office has gone, people travel elsewhere to collect their pension and benefit and so tend to stop using local shops.
The mailbag in my office in Willesden Green is full of letters from local people who are angry about the planned closures. I have raised the issue of poor consultation by the Post office in Parliament and I have also previously written to the Minister at the Department of Trade and Industry. However, this is a campaign where we can all achieve much more by working together.
I would strongly encourage all readers to display the Times/Chronicle poster in their window to show that they oppose the closures -- as I have done in my Willesden Office. I also ask readers if they would please sign my petition, which I shall be forwarding onto the Post Office and will hand in to 10 Downing Street. The more signatures we can collect the better. Readers can sign the petition online at www.sarahteather.org.uk, or by calling in to our office on 1 High Road, Willesden Green, NW10 2TE, or we will happily post out a petition form to anyone who phones my office (020 8459 0455) so readers can get their neighbours to join the campaign too.
Let's turn our frustration into action.
Yours sincerely
Sarah Teather
