BRENT tPCT CUTS WILL DEVASTE VOLUNTARY SECTOR IN BRENT- TEATHER

June 5, 2006 3:50 PM

Brent's Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has today slammed the cuts in the voluntary sector announced by Brent teaching Primary Care Trust (tPCT).

Ms Teather described the cuts to organisations such as Brent Citizens Advice Bureau, Brent Bereavement Service and Safe Haven as 'devastating' to the voluntary sector in Brent.

The tPCT are cutting £53,000 from Brent Citizen's Advice bureau meaning an end to advice services in GP surgeries which are already over-subscribed.

The cuts come as a part of a £16.5million savings package forced on the tPCT by the Labour Government.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"These cuts are devastating for the voluntary sector in Brent. Brent Citizen's Advice Bureau has people queuing up at half past six in the morning to see their outreach worker at local GP surgeries. This post will now have to be axed.

"The voluntary sector actually helps take the pressure off frontline NHS services. The tPCT's cuts will mean an increase in the workload for our already over-stretched doctors and nurses here in Brent.

"I have asked the PCT to reconsider its actions in the cuts it is proposing for the voluntary sector. I have already met with both Andrew Parker and Jean Gaffin. I will be speaking to voluntary organisations across Brent who are affected by the cuts to try and find a common way forward."
