Sarah Teather joined the Walking Bus with local children and teachers

Local MP for Brent East, Lib Dem Sarah Teather, has joined pupils at Margaret Clitherow School in Neasden as they attempt to break the world record for the longest ever 'walking bus'.

Over 120 pupils gathered at the school, before walking up Barnhill Road, towards English Martyrs Church and then down Quainton Street.

The walking bus is a safe, fun and healthy way to travel to and from school. Each walking bus had an adult 'driver' at the front and an adult 'conductor' bringing up the rear. The children walk to school in a group along a set route picking up additional 'passengers' at specific 'bus-stops' along the way. Children can chat to their friends, learn valuable road safety skills and gain some independence.

The scheme is also environmentally friendly, as it cuts down on unnecessary car journeys during the school run.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"The Walking Bus is a great scheme, and I was really pleased to join the children at St. Margaret Clitherow School in their record breaking attempt.

"Lots of parents in Brent don't have time to walk their children to school, but worry about children getting there alone. Walking to school in a large group is much safer than walking by yourself.

"Leaving the car at home is good for the environment and helps ease congestion, too. It would be fantastic if more schools adopted this great idea."
