Sarah Teather is opposing Labour's Post Office closures
Local Liberal Democrat Brent East MP Sarah Teather has obtained documents showing that Post Offices in Brent will be included in the Royal Mail's closure consultation.
Royal Mail were today forced to admit that they will start consultation on the future of Brent's Post Offices in April 2008. The Government have announced plans to axe 2,500 Post Offices across the UK, but have previously refused to indicate which Post Offices are at risk.
A quarter of the post offices in Brent have been closed since Labour came to power. If the trend continues there will be no Post Offices left in Brent by 2028.
Brent MP Sarah Teather and local Liberal Democrat councillors have actively campaigned against Labour's Post Office closures.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"Since Labour came to power we have lost a quarter of our Post Offices in Brent. I am astounded that Labour now plan to close a further 2,500 Post Offices.
"It is outrageous that information about the consultation process had to be forced out of Royal Mail by the Liberal Democrats. Decisions on the future of our Post Offices should be open and transparent.
"We don't need a consultation to tell us that people in Brent value their Post Offices and don't want them closed. The Government seem determined to dismiss local opinion in order to force through unpopular closures.
"Post offices are the bedrock of our communities. It is the most vulnerable and underprivileged in our society who use Post Offices the most, and it is essential that we preserve these services."
