Sarah Teather speaks up for all her constituents

Sarah Teather, Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East, has urged the Foreign Secretary to support democracy in Pakistan.

Sarah told the House of Commons that her constituents were frustrated with the Government's longstanding tolerance of a dictator who continues to rule with no respect for democracy. She is calling for the international community to hold General Musharraf to the many promises he has made to restore democracy for the people of Pakistan.

Sarah has also signed a parliamentary motion calling on President Musharraf to "lift the state of emergency and to restore the constitution, to lift the restrictions on press freedom, to release all political prisoners and to move towards democracy by holding free and fair elections by January 2008."

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"Living in such a diverse community means that when something happens abroad, it can often have a direct impact on my constituents here in Brent. I was pleased to raise the concerns of my constituents in the House of Commons.

"Who rules Pakistan should be a choice for the Pakistani people alone, and the Government must be cautious about implying they back any single individual. Instead they should focus their effort on persuading Musharraf to end the state of emergency, so that full and fair elections can take place.

"Pakistanis and others in Brent are naturally concerned about the increasing unstable situation abroad. The Government must now respond to my constituents' fears and pledge to hold General Musharraf to his promises."
