Sarah Backs Shelter Campaign

Sarah Teather signs Shelter declaration

Sarah Teather wants the Labour Government to do more for homeless people in Brent

Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather this week added her support to Shelter's campaign to highlight the plight of homeless people this Christmas.

More people are made homeless in Brent every month than in any other London borough. Shelter's report shows that the Government still does not provide enough specialist help, hostel places or 'move on' accommodation. This means many people in Brent remain trapped in unsuitable hostels without access to the support they need.

Shelter and Sarah want the Government to increase support and outreach work; provide more hostel beds and better standards; and more social housing so that more people can be offered suitable move on accommodation.

Sarah recently raised Brent's chronic housing shortage in the House of Commons.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"For most of us this time of year is for celebration, but it's important to remember those spending Winter on the streets. I am pleased to back Shelter's campaign to highlight the plight of homeless and overcrowded people in Brent this Christmas.

"Dealing with homelessness is not just about putting a roof over someone's head. People need support and advice to deal with their problems. And most of all, they need decent and affordable accommodation to 'move on' to.

"I have raised the dire housing situation in Brent in the House of Commons and will continue to do so until the Labour Government give this issue the priority it deserves."

Thanking Sarah Teather for her support Shelter Chief Executive Adam Sampson said:

"While real progress has been made in helping homeless people over the past ten years, lots more needs doing. That is why Shelter is delighted Sarah Teather has signed up to Shelter's Christmas campaign. Her support could be crucial in ensuring homeless people in Brent get a better deal by next Christmas."
