Nick Clegg has supported the Lib Dems local campaigns in Brent
Sarah Teather and the Brent Liberal Democrats received a huge boost today when Nick Clegg was confirmed as the new party leader.
The Liberal Democrats in Brent have gone from strength to strength in recent years, gaining 18 new Council seats in last year's local elections. The party were also buoyed by the Stonebridge by-election, which saw a 9% swing from Labour and a 15% swing from the Conservatives.
Nick Clegg has frequently visited Brent to help Sarah's campaigning on local issues.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"Nick has visited Brent several times recently to support our local campaigns, and I have always been impressed by his commitment to issues facing our borough.
"One of the greatest challenges we are facing is to reach those who no longer believe that politics can change anything. I know that Nick has the energy and the personality to reach not just those who haven't decided who to vote for, but those who haven't decided whether to bother voting at all.
"With Labour and the Conservatives increasingly looking like the same party it will be left to the Liberal Democrats to present Brent voters with a real alternative at the next election.
"The support of a strong leader like Nick Clegg will help my local campaigns against Labour's NHS cuts, Brent Post Office closures, and for fair funding for Brent Schools. Liberal Democrats in Brent are set to go from strength to strength."
Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg said:
"I am honoured to have been chosen by my fellow party members to be the new leader of the Liberal Democrats.
"Throughout Brent Liberal Democrats are already working hard to reach out to local people and listen to their concerns. In my leadership I will be taking that spirit nationwide, moving beyond party politics and making liberalism connect with the millions of people who share our values.
"Labour and the Conservatives have failed Britain's families. I will lead my party to change politics, and change Britain, for the better. Only the Liberal Democrats are committed to giving the people of Brent a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives, by shifting power away from Westminster and back to local communities.
"I will fight for a fair deal for Britain's families, campaign tirelessly to cut crime, and improve our NHS so it delivers the care people need."
