Teather Welcomes Obama Win

Sarah Teather and Barack Obama

Sarah Teather met Barack Obama in Washington to talk about a constituent case

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather has welcomed Barack Obama's success in winning the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

Sarah met Barack Obama when she visited Washington on behalf of her constituent. She spoke with the Senator about US prison camp Guantánamo Bay, and asked him to commit to having the detention centre closed.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"I warmly congratulate Barack Obama. He has inspired millions of people across the world, many of whom have never taken an interest in politics before.

"The American general election promises a new beginning. So many people in Brent remain angry at the way in which George Bush and Tony Blair waged an illegal war with Iraq, leaving thousands of civilians killed and the Middle East in turmoil.

"I very much hope that Barack Obama will deliver the change that he has promised. He should commit to a fundamental re-think on American foreign policy, leaving Iraq, closing Guantánamo Bay, taking the lead on climate change and working for peace in the Middle East.

"George Bush will leave the world a much more dangerous place than it was when he moved into the White House. The next American president should take the opportunity to start to put right the wrongs of Bush and Blair."

If you are a resident of the Brent Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
