Local MP Sarah Teather spoke up on behalf of victims in Brent
Brent's Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has used the final debate of the House of Commons before Summer recess to speak up about Brent's serious problems with gun and knife crime.
Fears about violent crime have been on the rise this year, after a series of high profile incidents in London. Even Labour's Home Secretary has admitted that she does not feel safe on the streets at night.
Local MP Sarah has worked closely with victims of knife crime in her constituency, including securing safer housing for a young family whose father was killed in Willesden Green.
Sarah is calling on the Government to be more consistent in the way they fund organisations that work with young people, so that local groups have the time and stability to build up trust with the community.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"Violent crime is a top concern for people in Brent, and it is important that the Government understand just how worried local people can be for their safety.
"We are fortunate in Brent to have some excellent local organisations that do really good work with young people. Projects such as Involve-RAW funded by Not Another Drop reach out to young people at an early age to keep them away from crime, and to help them see that carrying a knife puts you in more danger, not less.
"Local organisations need much more support from the Labour Government. Ministers don't seem to be able to make up their minds over where to focus funding, so that by the time a project has built up trust with the community, the money has often been moved elsewhere.
"It's high time that Gordon Brown's government stopped pulling the rug from under the feet of local youth projects, and gave Brent the proper support we need to beat knife crime and gun crime."
