Sarah Teather invited local charities to the House of Commons
Sarah Teather, local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East, has hosted a House of Commons meeting with representatives from Brent charities and voluntary organisations.
The meeting, organised in association with Brent Association for Voluntary Action (BrAVA), brought together representatives of local charities for a tour of parliament followed by a seminar discussion on both local and national issues affecting the sector.
Sarah listened to concerns including the struggle to secure funding, and fears that the Government were hiving off lottery money from good causes in order to pay for the London 2012 Olympics. The meeting also discussed the plans for a new resource centre for Brent's voluntary sector in Wembley, due to be completed in 2012 as part of the new development around Wembley Stadium.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who give their time for free. Local volunteers work so hard for our community and are often on the front line, delivering services to vulnerable people in Brent.
"Brent is one of the most disadvantaged boroughs in London, so when a Government policy is failing we often feel the impact first. It's so important for me to keep in touch with charity workers and to hear their concerns first hand.
"I would like to thank all those who came to take part in the day. I will continue to do all I can to support Brent's local charities and voluntary organisations."
