Sarah will help campaign for better conditions for teachers in Nigeria
Local Brent Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather will use part of the parliamentary recess to help Nigerian teachers campaign for better conditions.
Sarah will spend two weeks working with a Nigerian education organisation, at the invitation of the international volunteering organisation, Voluntary Services Overseas. Sarah will be working to help teachers campaign for better terms and conditions, better management systems and increased transparency in the education system. Fewer than 60% of children in Nigeria regularly attend school, and the lack of trained teachers means that there is only one teacher for every 78 pupils.
In Brent, Sarah has fought and won a number of successful campaigns against the UK Government, and VSO are keen that she uses this experience to help Nigerian teachers campaign for more support from their own government.
Sarah will be based in Abuja, the capital city, but also hopes to visit other parts of the country during her two weeks work, in what is expected to be a very challenging placement.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"I'm really pleased to be working with teachers in Nigeria, who find it difficult to get their voices heard. I very much hope to be able to draw on my own experience of campaigning in Brent.
"If we are to help Nigerian children out of poverty then education has to be one of the first steps. Without qualified teachers, it is impossible to pass down knowledge to the next generation.
"There are many Nigerians in Brent, and a lot of my constituents are concerned about conditions in the developing world. This is a real opportunity to experience the country and its culture first hand. I'm looking forward to getting out there to do my bit."
