Sarah Teather supports local Brent Post Offices
Liberal Democrat local Brent MP Sarah Teather has backed the Post Office Card Account after Government plans were revealed that could force the closure of even more Post Offices in Brent.
News leaked this week shows that the Government plans to withdraw the successful Post Office Card Account (POCA) actively used by an estimated 3 million people in the UK. This move that could mean that even more local Post Offices will be forced to close their doors.
Brent residents have already seen 6 Post Office branches close since Autumn, and almost half of Brent's Post Offices axed since Labour Came to power. The new Government plans suggest a further 3,000 will have to be axed across the entire country.
Sarah has backed a parliamentary motion calling for the Government to guarantee the future of the Post Office and to ensure that it makes services available through Post Office branches. So far, no other Brent MP has signed the motion.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"This latest news comes as another kick in the teeth for the thousands of Post Office customers in Brent. We have already seen almost half of our Post Offices closed. Little by little, this Government seems intent on destroying a network that many people rely upon to live their lives.
"Calling time on the Post Office Card Account puts more branches at risk and shows the Labour Government just aren't prepared to listen to Brent customers on this issue. Instead of supporting the Post Office the Government have undermined its business at every turn.
"The Post Office offers a unique and highly valued service to many local people in Brent and it is vital that it is protected to serve our community. I will continue to fight for the Post Office in the face of the Government's failure to recognise the immense value of these services to local people."
