Job Centre Decision Good News For Tough Times - Teather

Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather is celebrating the Government's u-turn on the proposal to close the Kilburn Job Centre.

Over 1 in 10 adult men are unemployed in Kilburn, yet the Government had planned to close Kilburn's only Jobcentre office, forcing Kilburn residents to use the Harlesden and Willesden offices instead. But after a vigorous campaign by Sarah and local residents the Government have now agreed that it is essential for the Job Centre to remain open.

Sarah has raised the matter with Government Ministers and also chaired a public meeting. Her parliamentary motion in the House of Commons was supported by the Liberal Democrat Work and Pensions Spokesperson. No other local MP backed the motion.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"Kilburn has one of the highest unemployment rates in Brent. With local people feeling the pinch and worried about their future, this would have been the worst possible time to make it harder for people to get back into work.

"I am delighted that the Kilburn Job Centre will now remain open. Theresa Raftery, the PSC Union and other local campaigners pulled out all the stops to force the Government to reconsider, and this decision is a real tribute to their hard work.

"I was pleased to support their campaign by raising the proposed closure with Government ministers and tabling a motion in the House of Commons.

"Lots of people who are unemployed desperately want to return to work, but need help to take those first steps. I will continue to fight for the Government to make it easier for people to return to work, not harder."

If you are a resident of the Brent Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
