Local Liberal Democrat Brent East MP Sarah Teather has accepted an invitation to become a patron of Silver Star, a charity campaigning to promote diabetes awareness and to provide diabetes screening.

The Silver Star Appeal was launched in January 2007 and provides free tests for diabetes at two centres in Manchester and London. The charity also runs a mobile unit which carries out diabetes testing in the community. The unit travels to local community centres, schools, work places and other organisations and is equipped with a bed, sink and entrance for disabled people.

While diabetes occurs in people of all ages and races, some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 2 diabetes is more common in Asians, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and is more common in people of all backgrounds as they get older.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East, Sarah Teather, said:

"I was delighted to accept the invitation from Silver Star to become a patron of their charity and to support such an important cause.

"Diabetes is more common in people with an Indian and Pakistani background, especially as they get older, and we have a large Indian and Pakistani community in Brent. Testing services need to reach out to all communities, but particularly those who are most at risk.

"It's so important to have a check up for diabetes if you think you might be at risk. Diabetes is a serious illness if untreated, but people with diabetes can and do live long, healthy, happy lives.

"I look forward to working with Silver Star to raise awareness for those with diabetes both in Brent and across the country."
