Labour's Brent Jobs Funding Cut Shameful - Teather

Sarah Teather MP speaks at a press conference

Sarah thinks that the Labour government should be helping people find work, not making it harder

The Labour Government's decision to take back £4 million of funding to help local people back into work has been branded shameful by local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather.

The Government had initially allocated £8.2 million of the Working Neighbourhood Fund to Brent for helping people get back into work. Now they are set to take back £4 million of that money.

In Brent the Working Neighbourhood Fund has been used to finance successful local projects such as the Brent In2 Work Scheme which has seen 4,000 local people return to work over the past six years.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"I am shocked by the Government's decision to take this vital money away from local people. If Gordon Brown can find £32 billion to bail out the banks why does he need to take money away from local people looking for work?"

"Many of the people in Brent who have been helped by Brent In2 Work had been out of work for over twelve months. These are exactly the sort of people we should be helping now. For Labour to take money away from local services to help people find work in the current economic climate is simply shameful."
