Local Brent Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather is to host a debate on international conflict, alongside Middle East expert Bishop William Kenney and Chris Bain, director of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.

The talk, entitled "International Conflict: How do we make a difference?", will take place on Friday 27th March 2009 at 7pm at Cardinal Hinsley School, Harlesden Road. Debate will focus on international conflict and the appropriate religious, political and developmental responses.

The debate will be chaired by Father Hugh MacKenzie, of St. Mary Magdalen's Church in Willesden Green.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"It is a real privilege to be sharing a panel with such distinguished speakers. Chris Bain and Bishop Kenney are experts in their field and have delivered real help to people living through often devastating conflict.

"I feel passionately about these issues, and recently visited Gaza to see first hand the humanitarian impact of the current conflict. Whatever the politics of the Middle East, it cannot be right that so many people are living through such devastating destruction, stuck in slum conditions and deprived of even the most basic amenities.

"Lots of people in Brent care passionately about events abroad, but all too often we feel completely helpless when we see distressing images on our TV screens. I hope this talk will challenge people to think about how they can make a difference."

The debate starts at 7pm at Cardinal Hinsley School, Harlesden Road, NW10 3RN. Members of the press are welcome to attend. Admission is free, but there will be a collection afterwards for CAFOD.
