London MPs Second Home Allowances Must Be Abolished - Teather

Local Liberal Democrat Brent MP Sarah Teather has tabled a motion in parliament calling for the second home allowance for London MPs to be scrapped.

Sarah Teather has never claimed money for a second home, despite being entitled to do so, as she has just one home in Willesden Green.

Last year an amendment proposed by a Brent Labour MP allowed London MPs to continue claiming up to £24,000 for second homes and lavish furnishings. Sarah Teather voted against the amendment.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"It is completely unacceptable that London MPs living within commuting distance of Westminster are allowed to claim money for a second home. I am proud to live in Brent and perfectly able to travel into central London on the tube alongside my constituents.

"Labour and Conservative MPs need to wake up and smell the coffee. With so many people in Brent struggling to pay the bills on one home, it is grossly offensive that Labour MPs get a handout so they can afford two.

"It's time for parliament to clean up it's act. The London second homes scandal doesn't just damage individual MPs; it damages our democracy. Until Labour MPs are prepared to stand up and vote for change, it will be business as usual at Westminster."

If you are a resident of the Brent Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
