Labour's smear tactics have been brought to Brent by Dawn Butler's campaign
Three weeks ago Gordon Brown's political advisor Damien McBride had to be dismissed over attempts to smear senior opposition politicians. Now Brent Labour have slumped to even lower levels by distributing a negative smear leaflet against popular hardworking Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather.
Under-fire Labour MP Dawn Butler has faced a series of setbacks in her campaign for Brent Central in the last month. Ms Butler was exposed by the BBC as claiming over £60,000 of taxpayers' money for a second home despite her principal home being under 30 minutes away from Westminster. Ms Butler has also seen her odds on winning Brent Central lengthen.
Local Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Leaman said:
"Three weeks ago Gordon Brown's right hand man had to go over attempts to smear opposition politicians with disgraceful mistruths. Now we see Dawn Butler's campaign slump to the same levels. Dawn Butler should sack the person responsible for this leaflet immediately. There is no place for this kind of gutter politics in Brent. It is offensive to all those who campaign tirelessly for local people.
"Dawn Butler has rightly faced scrutiny for taking over £60,000 of taxpayers' money to purchase a second home. It is disappointing when her campaign's response is not to apologise to the people of Brent but to launch a negative smear campaign. Clearly when Dawn Butler and Labour are under pressure they have nothing left but smears, smears and more smears.
"Ms Butler should apologise not just to hardworking local MP Sarah Teather but also to local people for bringing Labour's smear tactics to Brent. It is a sad state of affairs when the people supposedly running the country have nothing left to say but smears and mis-truths. There really is no place for this kind of politics in our local community."
