Local MP Sarah is fighting for Brent pensioners
Local Liberal Democrat Brent MP Sarah Teather has congratulated Brent Council on their decision not to hike up day care charges for the elderly.
Following Sarah's representations, the consultation on charges was extended to allow more people in Brent to have their say. Council leaders have now agreed that day care charges should remain low, to give elderly residents a bit of extra help through the recession.
In parliament, Sarah Teather is campaigning for an extra £2 billion investment in care services to pay for a 'universal care guarantee', based on an individual's need, not their ability to pay. This would slash care costs and guarantee a minimum standard of care for those who need it.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"I am absolutely delighted that Brent Council have listened to the views of people in Brent. At a time when so many elderly and vulnerable residents are struggling it is more important than ever to keep day care charges down.
"Care charges are going up right across the country. The Labour government have now had more than ten years to tackle the problem of unfair social care charges. It's completely unacceptable that so many people find themselves having to sell the family home or make cuts to the household budget just so they can afford to be looked after in their old age.
"Sadly, the Government can always find the money to go to war or to bail out big banks, but they can never find the money to care for older people. We have to start getting our priorities right.
"I will continue my campaign in parliament to see an extra £2billion put into funding social care, so that every older person in Brent can get a minimum care package free."
