Sarah Teather has been a strong supporter of the Brent Sickle Cell And Thalassaemia Centre
Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather joined patients and supporters at Central Middlesex Hospital to celebrate 30 years of the Brent Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre.
At the event Sarah was joined by founders and patrons of the Centre as well as doctors and patients of Central Middlesex Hospital.
This weekend Sarah also attended a memorial service at All Souls Church in Harlesden for all those who have been lost to Sickle Cell Disease, organised by the Sickle Cell Society. The national Sickle Cell Society grew out of the Brent Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre and the Society is also celebrating its 30th anniversary year.
Local Brent MP and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Sickle Cell Group Sarah Teather said:
"I would like to congratulate the Brent Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre and the Sickle Cell Society on their 30th anniversary.
"Sickle cell and Thalassaemia affect many people in Brent. All too often they have not only to battle the pain and disability caused by the disease, but also relative ignorance by those around them.
"It's important that we work hard to raise awareness of the condition in parliament and to campaign for better services for people affected by the condition. Medical research for a cure is vital, but in the meantime, we must make sure that people get the best possible care and the support they need to live a full life."
