Once again voters abandoned the Labour party to elect local foster carer Afifa Pervez
Afifa Pervez is the new Councillor for Wembley Central ward in Brent, after local Liberal Democrats won the by-election held in the ward yesterday.
Wembley Central falls within the parliamentary constituency of Labour MP Dawn Butler, and the by-election was the first test of public opinion in the seat since it was revealed that Brent's Labour MPs have spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money on second homes and luxury furnishing.
The Liberal Democrats secured 42% of the vote, with Labour trailing on 32% and the Conservatives behind again on 15%. It is now over eight years since the Conservatives have managed to come higher than third place in a by-election in Brent.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor for Wembley Central Afifa Pervez said:
"I would like to say a massive thank you to all those who voted for me yesterday. It is a real honour to represent an area where I have lived for over thirty years. I promise to work hard and to do my very best for the people of Wembley.
"Top of my list of priorities will be making Wembley cleaner, safer, and supporting our vibrant High Street through these tough times."
Liberal Democrat Leader of Brent Council, Councillor Paul Lorber said:
"Even Labour's highly negative and personal campaign tactics couldn't prevent voters from turning away from the party in their droves. People in Wembley have sent a clear message to Brent's Labour MPs over their shameful abuse of taxpayer's money.
"Once again the Conservatives trailed in a distant third place, leaving Sarah Teather and the Liberal Democrats as the only real challengers to Labour in Brent."
