Sarah Teather wants war criminals brought to justice
Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather has demanded in parliament that the government take action to stop international war criminals from using Britain as a safe haven.
The government plan to maintain laws which offer sanctuary to criminals who come to the UK but do not formally apply for British residency. Amnesty International have protested that this would allow those accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, to escape trial.
Sarah demanded that Justice Ministers close this legal loop hole so that those who stand accused of war crimes can be prosecuted through the UK courts.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"People in Brent care deeply about justice and the rule of international law, and have been horrified to see conflict and violence tearing apart countries where many have family and friends. It is devastating to think that those responsible for such terror could be offered sanctuary here in the UK.
"If people commit genocide, war crimes or other crimes against humanity, they should know that they will be met with the full force of the law when they come to our country. The Labour government must stop making excuses and urgently promise to clamp down on the loop holes that allow warlords to escape justice."
