Sarah Teather is fighting for better housing for people in Brent
Local Liberal Democrat campaigning MP Sarah Teather has uncovered new statistics showing that more than one in five families living in social housing in London have been abandoned to inadequate housing.
Despite this, the government have announced that they will pay for Gordon Brown's latest election pledges by a £225m raid on the home improvements budget, including slashing £150million from the "decent homes" fund.
Local MP Sarah Teather, who is also Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister, is calling for urgent reform to housing finance so that councils have more freedom to invest cash in local homes.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"The Government is raiding housing budgets so they can spend the money where it will win a few desperately needed positive headlines. It is completely unacceptable that those families in Brent living in dreadful conditions could find themselves paying for Gordon Brown's electioneering.
"With one in five council tenants left forgotten in sub-standard properties, the Labour government have abandoned the very people who voted them into power. The thousands of people in Brent living in run down, overcrowded, cold and draughty housing need help now.
"Gordon Brown should have the guts to say exactly where his axe will fall. Poor housing is a blight on our society and ruins lives. Instead of robbing Peter to pay Paul, Gordon Brown needs to commit to a radical improvement in the awful conditions in which he has forced so many families in Brent to live."
