Sarah Teather is campaigning for the Labour government to call in the scheme
Liberal Democrat Brent East MP Sarah Teather has vowed to continue campaigning in the wake of Barnet Council's decision to delay the planning hearing for the controversial Brent Cross Cricklewood Development.
The scheme, now recommended for approval by Barnet Council, would include a large waste dump on the border with Brent and would bring an estimated 29,000 extra cars a day onto local roads. Both Brent and Camden Council have formally opposed the plans, and thousands of local residents have signed petitions supporting Sarah's call for the Labour Government to "call in" the scheme.
The planning hearing, originally scheduled for Wednesday 23rd September, has now been delayed "to allow members of the public more time".
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"This development would have a huge impact on my constituency, yet Barnet Council have hardly bothered to ask local people in Brent what they think. Regeneration should be about making an area better, not worse. The effects of tens of thousands of extra cars on roads that are already often grid locked would be disastrous.
"This deferral has granted campaigners a stay of execution. The developer should be under no illusion as to the depth of local feeling, and must now use this extra time to go back to the drawing board and come back with a scheme that will benefit people on both sides of the Barnet-Brent border.
"It beggars belief that Barnet planners have recommended the current scheme for approval in defiance of the views of so many local groups, organisations and individual residents. The Secretary of State must listen to the thousands who have signed our petition and promise to call in the scheme as a matter of urgency."
