Sarah Teather is running a petition for Metropolitan line trains to stop at Willesden Green
Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has spoken out against the Jubilee line weekend suspensions after it emerged that work already causing huge disruption for Brent passengers would continue into the new year.
Jubilee Line trains are currently suspended at the weekend to allow for works to the line. Transport for London (TfL) originally planned to finish this work on 31st March this year, but then pushed the date back to 31st October and then 31st December 2009. Now they have announced that work will continue into 2010.
At Mayor's Question Time, Boris Johnson was forced to reveal that TfL have spent half a million pounds on platform upgrades at Willesden Green. Despite this, they will not allow Metropolitan trains to stop at the station to ease the disruption while the Jubilee line is out of service.
Sarah is campaigning for Metropolitan line trains to stop at Willesden Green and Neasden stations, and for season ticket holders to be refunded for the two days a week when they are unable to travel.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"It is outrageous that, despite public outrage at the disruption to their lives, transport chiefs have decided that Jubilee line closures should continue into the new year. They have pushed the completion date backwards so many times its no wonder local people are tearing their hair out.
"It cannot be right that people in Willesden Green who hold a season ticket have paid to use public transport seven days a week, yet are receiving only a five day service. TfL should play fair and promise to refund season ticket holders for the two days they cannot travel.
"Having asked their customers to shell out for a decent Metropolitan line platform at Willesden Green, TfL must now promise to make sure trains stop there. What kind of organisation refurbishes a platform then refuses to use it? Anyone would think they were scared of letting the new paving get dirty.
"Local people should not have to put up with disruption every weekend for as long as TfL feel like it. Transport chiefs should pick a date and stick with it."
