Marks And Spencer Should Return To Wembley - Teather

Sarah Teather spoke to M&S boss on behalf of local people

Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has asked Marks and Spencer boss Sir Stuart Rose to reopen a branch in Wembley.

Marks and Spencer Wembley had been a popular branch, but was closed on 13th August 2005. The site, which has now been redeveloped, lies opposite a deserted Woolworths store. There is no other Marks and Spencer branch in Brent.

Sarah has been campaigning alongside local Liberal Democrat Councillors to have Marks and Spencer return to Brent, possibly as part of the Wembley Stadium redevelopment. Last week Sarah appeared on BBC TV's Question Time alongside M&S Chief Executive Stuart Rose, and asked him to explore options for a new store.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"Marks and Spencer was hugely important to Wembley High Street and to Brent. Once good quality stores disappear fewer people want to visit the street and the whole area starts to decline. This problem has got worse recently, with Labour's recession leaving ugly gaps in our High Streets.

"Lots of local people have told me how upset they were when the Marks and Spencer store in Wembley closed. A new branch either as part of the stadium redevelopment or on the High Street would draw more people to the area and help other local traders as well.

"The opening of TK Maxx shows that there is a strong business case for Marks and Spencer to return. I was pleased to make this case directly to Stuart Rose on behalf of Brent residents.

"I hope Sir Stuart will listen to the people of Brent and promise to look seriously at reopening a store here. Marks and Spencer needs Wembley just as Wembley needs Marks and Spencer."
