Local MP Sarah Teather is fighting alongside local people

Liberal Democrat Brent East MP Sarah Teather has again urged the government to call in the unpopular Brent Cross Cricklewood development.

The controversial scheme was pushed through by Barnet's Labour and Conservative councillors against the wishes of local people and in the face of formal opposition from neighbouring boroughs Brent and Camden. The Labour government now have only a few days left to refer the scheme to a public enquiry.

The development includes a large waste dump on the border with Brent and would bring an estimated 29,000 extra cars a day onto local roads. Thousands of local residents have signed petitions supporting Sarah's demand for the Labour government to call in the scheme.

Sarah has written to the Secretary of State for a fourth time urging him to take action.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"Ministers hold the future of our area in their hands, and now have only a few days left to do the right thing for the thousands of people in Brent set to be affected by this hated development.

"If the scheme goes ahead we face tens of thousands of extra cars on local roads, every single day of the week, not to mention hundreds of extra lorries and trucks on their way to the dump. That would be a disaster for local people and a disaster for the environment.

"You simply cannot build a colossal new urban centre without taking steps to protect the environment and the community that is already there. Local campaigners are understandably furious that councillors in Barnet forced through the scheme despite the cries of objection from their neighbours in Brent and Camden.

"The Labour government have it in their power to right this wrong. After months of dithering they must now urgently step in to protect our area from the devastating impact of this development."

Lia Colacicco, Co-ordinator of the Coalition for a Sustainable Brent Cross Cricklewood Plan and a Mapesbury resident said:

"We will be asking the Secretary of State how this new town can be built when everything about it goes against current Government policy. What is the point of spending millions of pounds in grants to improve existing housing stock, whilst at the same time allowing one of the largest new developments in the UK to be built to such twentieth century specifications?

"Zero emission developments are already being built all over the country - why can't Brent Cross be innovative and lead the way. John Denham should reject these outdated plans."
