Sarah Teather has previously campaigned for new buildings for Crest Academies
Local Brent Central MP Sarah Teather has welcomed the decision to give rebuilding work at Crest Academies in Brent the green light.
Crest Academies, formerly John Kelly Schools, is in desperate need of rebuilding, with successive generations of Brent children taught in unsuitable and dilapidated temporary classrooms. The government has now announced that both academies will be included in forty four projects set to go ahead despite the dire financial situation.
Sarah has spent many years campaigning for rebuilding work at the Crest Academies and has repeatedly raised the issue in parliament. She recently took a delegation from Brent to meet with the Secretary of State for Education to make the case for building work at Crest Academies.
Other schools in Brent, including Copland, may also be considered for new buildings following a review of the building fund.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central Sarah Teather said:
"Teachers and students at Crest Academies have been working out of unsuitable and derelict temporary classrooms for decades. Entire generations of Brent children have had to put up with inadequate school buildings and, quite simply, they deserve better.
"I am very pleased that after years of campaigning, and despite the dire state of the public finances, Crest Academies will now get the money they need to rebuild. This is the right decision, and will make a real difference to lives in Brent.
"Of course other schools in our borough will be disappointed that they do not yet know if they will also be receiving refurbishment money. Copland, Cardinal Hinlsey, Alperton and Queen's Park schools should all have the opportunity to make their case under the new building fund."
