Brent Central MP Sarah Teather has this week announced that the Pupil Premium will be extended to cover any child that has been registered for Free School Meals in the past six years. In Brent, this means around 3,600 extra pupils will benefit from the Pupil Premium.
Across the country, more than half a million additional children will qualify for the Pupil Premium. The overall funding for the premium next year will be £1.25 billion and schools in Sarah's constituency will receive £3.7 million.
The decision to extend the Pupil Premium to cover more children builds on the announcement from the Department of Education to increase next year's Pupil Premium by £112. This means that for 2012-13, schools will benefit from an additional £600 per eligible child in funding to help support disadvantaged pupils.
Commenting, Brent Central MP and Minister for Children and Families Sarah Teather said:
"I am delighted that even in these tough economic times, the Government will be extending the Pupil Premium to another 3,600 pupils in Brent, and increasing the money that schools get to £600 per pupil.
"This money will directly benefit the most disadvantaged pupils in Brent. Individual schools are best placed to decide how to spend the extra funding to support their pupils. This could be through investing in better IT resources, providing extra tuition, or a whole host of options that will help to raise attainment.
"For too long, social background has been a deciding factor in a child's chances for the future. As a Liberal Democrat, I believe that in a fair society, a Government should work to overcome this disadvantage and help children reach their full potential."
