Brent Central MP Sarah Teather has welcomed the announcement that Cricklewood will receive a £1.676m boost from the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund. The extra funding comes as a result of Cricklewood Improvement Programme's (CIP) successful bid and will contribute towards a series of events and projects to reinvigorate Cricklewood.
The CIP was formed by Cricklewood Homeless Concern in partnership with local residents associations to support local people in the ownership and development of the neighbourhood. It aims to revitalise the area by transforming the identity of Cricklewood by enhancing shop fronts and making other physical improvements such as tree planting and improving access for cyclists.
Alongside Camden and Barnet Councils, the bid was backed by Brent Council, but only after intervention from local Liberal Democrats - Mapesbury ward councillors and residents had been told that the needs of Cricklewood were not a priority for the Labour administration.
However, when Lib Dem Mapesbury councillors Chris Leaman, Hayley Matthews and Sami Hashmi presented a request to back the bid to a full council meeting in September, councillors supported the project. This forced the Labour leadership to change their tune and support the CIP bid.
Commenting on the news, local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:
"This is great news that the bid has been successful. It's just reward for the fantastic work done by Cricklewood Improvement Programme. Congratulations to the CIP committee and everybody that has been involved with the bid.
"I'm glad that, after some initial reluctance, the Labour administration in Brent was persuaded to back the bid. The failure of Brent Council to join Barnet and Camden Councils could have dealt the project a fatal blow."
"It's important that in these tough times we look at ways to support town centres and this extra money will be a big boost to Cricklewood. I look forward now to seeing the money being put to good use, improving the area for local residents, business and visitors."
