Axe The Tax Says Teather3.32.27pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 3rd Mar 2004
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has called for Council Tax to be scrapped following the Council Tax setting meeting at Brent Town Hall on Monday night. The Brent East MP is calling for a local income tax based on the ability to pay as a replacement for the unfair council tax. Local residents can learn more about the campaign to axe Council Tax at http://www.axethetax.org.uk Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said: "The council tax is the most hated tax in Britain. It was brought in under the Conservatives and has been made worse under Labour. It is an unfair tax that hits vulnerable groups such as pensioners hardest. The Audit Commission has described council tax as 'fundamentally flawed'. It is surely time for this unfair tax to go. "I believe that a local income tax based on a persons ability to pay offers a much fairer alternative to this hated tax."
