It's Simon or Blair's Mayor7.36.56pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 31st May 2004
The Conservatives are out of the race as the campaign enters the final days in Brent. The race to be London Mayor is a straight fight between Lib Dem Simon Hughes and Tony Blair's Mayor. Conservative Steve Norris's campaign looks doomed after damaging newspaper revelations about his business background. The Conservatives finished in a poor third place in the by-election in Brent last year and cannot win around here. Many local residents are impressed by Simon Hughes commitment to tackle crime and to improve transport in London. Simon Hughes is pledging to deliver real improvements for Londoners. Lib Dem Simon Hughes said: "I want an easier, safer and more united London. My vision is nothing less than a Greater London, the most exciting place in Europe and the world, where we are united in making this great capital a place we are all proud to live, not some of the time but all of the time." If elected, Simon Hughes will introduce a 'Minimum Policing Guarantee' of four officers and four Police Community Support Officers for every ward of every borough by 2008. Simon Hughes stands for real action on crime. Related Link:Learn more about Simon Hughes's campaign to put Londoners first.
