Sarah hopes the Gobstopper scheme will reduce assaults on bus drivers

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has today attended the launch of Operation Gobstopper at Willesden Bus Garage. Operation Gobstopper aims to catch and deter people who assault bus drivers by spitting at them, using CCTV and DNA kits.

Operation Gobstopper is the first of its kind in London using forensic technology to address spitting. It is a joint initiative between the Metropolitan Police, Metroline and the Transport & General Workers Union.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"I welcome the initiative to reduce assaults on bus drivers through spitting. Nobody should have to tolerate being spat at, in or out of the workplace. Speaking to bus drivers who have been victims of spitting there seems to be a real sense that this scheme will be a deterrent.

"Being spat at is a horrible thing not only is it totally anti-social it also carries health risks particularly in a place like Brent, which has such a high rate of TB."
