Sarah Nominated For MP Of The Year Award5.46.08pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 24th Jan 2008
Brent's Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has been nominated for the prestigious "MP of the Year Award". The "MP of the Year" category is part of the annual Women In Public Life Awards, given to "the most effective woman in the House of Commons who has shown outstanding parliamentary achievement during the year either as a minister or backbencher and who has done much to positively raise the standing of politics both inside the House and with the public." Sarah's nomination recognises that she has been "a regular speaker in the Chamber and one of the most avid tablers of written questions in the current Parliament. By March 2006 she had received answers to more than 600 questions, the tenth-highest of any MP." Also this year, Sarah has successfully campaigned for the release of her constituent from Guantánamo Bay, persuaded Ministers not to close Brent's family magistrates courts, and secured a u-turn from Brent Primary Care Trust on funding for children's wheelchairs. She has also helped hundreds of local residents in her constituency office on Willesden High Road. Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said: "I will continue to fight against local NHS cuts and Post Office closures which hit the most vulnerable people in our community. Brent is a desperately needy borough, and I have been proud to be able to help with the many problems that people bring to my surgeries and office on the High Road. "For me politics isn't about winning awards, but winning for my constituents. I have worked hard for local people over the last year, and this nomination is a real tribute to all those who have campaigned alongside me here in Brent." Related Links:
