Sarah Supports Brent Climate Change Demonstration10.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 4th Apr 2008
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather joined Brent Friends of the Earth in Willesden today to send a message to Gordon Brown that he must stop ignoring the damning environmental impact of aviation. Sarah is calling on the Government to toughen up the Climate Change Bill, so it includes action to tackle the emissions produced by flights and shipping. The Liberal Democrats have also launched a Facebook campaign demanding an 80% cut in CO2 emissions by 2050. Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said: "I congratulate Brent Friends of the Earth for demonstrating on an issue that so many local residents feel strongly about. Today we sent a clear message to the Labour Government that we need real and urgent action on Climate Change. Gordon Brown's current plans don't go nearly far enough. "Aviation is the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gases leading to climate change, yet the Government seem to be sitting back and hoping the problem will go away. We can no longer afford to ignore emissions from international aviation and shipping. "Gordon Brown needs to realise that climate change is the responsibility of us all, including the Prime Minster. Five year emissions targets are a disgraceful ploy to escape taking responsibly. We need annual emissions targets so we can properly hold our politicians to our account. "Environment Ministers must start acting tough as well as talking tough if they really want to save our planet." Related Links:
