Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has condemned Barnet Council's plans to build a rubbish plant on the border with Brent.

The Conservative run Council is proposing to relocate a large waste re-processing plant next door to a residential area on Edgware Road, in the face of furious opposition from local residents. If approved, the plans could see hundreds of extra lorries passing homes in the Dollis Hill area every day. Yet Barnet Council has consulted only a tiny handful local households.

Local people in Neasden have spent years fighting against a similar facility, with Sarah giving evidence in court against a waste firm polluting the area. The noise, dust and pollution have been a constant irritant as well as giving people real fears for their health.

Sarah has promised residents in Dollis Hill that she will help fight the plans, and is organising a petition to send to Council chiefs in Barnet.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"The dump may be planned for Barnet, but there is no doubt that local people in Brent are also at risk from any increase in traffic, noise and pollution. It is absolutely vital that Conservative councillors in Barnet consult people in Brent fully and listen to their views.

"We have spent years fighting a similar dump in Neasden, which has had a severe impact on people's quality of life. It is deeply upsetting that we now face another battle against the potential effects of pollution and disruption in our borough.

"I will stand shoulder to shoulder with my constituents to tell Barnet Council that dumping their waste so close to people's homes in Brent is simply unacceptable."
