Local MP Sarah Teather supports work to help homeless people in Brent

Local Brent East Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has welcomed the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, to the opening of a new centre for the homeless in Cricklewood.

Cricklewood Homeless Concern's new Community Resource Centre will deliver services to both homeless people and local residents.

The charity was established in 1983 with a day centre and residential unit addressing the needs of those living in insecure housing, hostels or on the street. Many of the people who use the charity are extremely vulnerable and could have drug, alcohol or other mental health problems.

The day centre offers hot meals and washing facilities, as well as specialist services such as housing advice and mental health support.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"I was delighted to welcome the Irish President to our borough to open this excellent new resource centre. Brent has a devastatingly large number of people without a home. As we approach Christmas it is so important to remember those who will be spending the festive season and New Year on the streets or moving from one friend's sofa to another.

"Cricklewood Homeless Concern is an excellent local charity that provides a lifeline to those who have nowhere else to turn. I congratulate them on such a fantastic fundraising effort and know that this new building will make life a little less difficult for Brent's homeless."
