Sarah Teather is running a positive campaign in Brent Central

Sarah Teather is going from strength to strength in Brent Central after a rush of new opinion polls showed the Liberal Democrats leading the election race as Labour support crumbles.

The historic polls, which put the Liberal Democrats in their strongest position since Sarah Teather won the Brent East by-election in 2003, follow a dismal performance from Gordon Brown at the first ever leaders' debates. Viewers overwhelmingly declared Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg the winner.

Brent Central is a close fight between Gordon Brown's Labour and Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats, with the Conservatives set to come a distant third here.

Local Liberal Democrat candidate for Brent Central Sarah Teather said:

"Nick Clegg's impressive and honest television performance has been a huge boost to our campaign. More and more people across Brent are realising that only the Liberal Democrats can end thirteen years of Labour failure in Brent.

"I have been the only Brent MP with a constituency office open to the public five days a week and was the only Brent MP to refuse the shamed second home allowance. I hope that people who want a different kind of politics will back our positive campaign here in Brent."

Local Liberal Democrat Spokesperson Councillor Chris Leaman said:

"Brent Labour are resorting to increasingly desperate tactics as they come under pressure. Dawn Butler took over £60,000 of taxpayer's money to lavish on her second London home. It's increasingly clear that Labour are engulfed in controversy, out of ideas and have nothing left to offer.

"With the Labour party in disarray and the Conservatives out of the race, Sarah Teather is going from strength to strength in Brent Central."
